Insights Into Building a Unified Physician Enterprise for the Modern Academic Health System

As the health care landscape shifts toward scale, consolidation, and value-based care, academic health systems (AHSs) face a defining challenge: how to unite academic and community physician groups, which have historically functioned independently of one another, into a cohesive, high-performing enterprise. No longer can academic and community physician groups operate in parallel; integration is now a strategic imperative central to clinical growth, financial stability, and the sustainability of the education and research missions.

To learn more about how AHSs across the United States are addressing this challenge, the AAMC partnered with ECG Management Consultants (ECG) to conduct a study, which revealed that many AHSs are not pursuing a one-size-fits-all model, but are designing physician enterprises that reflect local context and strategic intent. Their efforts have demonstrated that more successful integration of physician groups requires adaptive leadership, a long-term commitment to collaboration, and the ability to navigate complexity.
