Governor Gianforte Highlights Workforce Training Opportunities in Big Timber

BIG TIMBER, Mont. - Highlighting growing workforce training opportunities across Montana, Governor Greg Gianforte recently visited Sweet Grass Technical Institute in Big Timber to highlight the program that provides hands-on learning for Montana students.

"Since taking office, we've made great strides to increase work-based learning opportunities for Montana students to equip them with in-demand skills and prepare them for the workforce," Gov. Gianforte said. "Hands-on learning programs like those offered at Sweet Grass Tech allow students to learn while increasing the number of skilled workers and making our communities stronger."

Founded in 2017, Sweet Grass Tech provides career-focused education in automotive technology, partnering with local schools to offer students hands-on experience in car restoration and repair. Students learn mechanical skills, problem-solving, and teamwork, preparing them for careers in Montana's growing technical workforce.

During his visit, the governor met with students and instructors who are restoring vehicles as part of the hands-on program.

"As a senior, working on these projects has shown me I'm capable of more than I imagined," said Dillon Gehnert, senior at Reed Point High School. "Each project teaches me new skills, and I can't wait to apply what I'm learning to my future career. It's been more fun and rewarding than anything I've done before. The program has made me less scared to work on things and not afraid to just go out and do it, while building fundamental skills I'll use for years to come."

"I started substituting at the high school and realized how much I enjoyed teaching and helping the next generation," said Casey Smith, automotive instructor for Sweet Grass Tech. "I've been a mechanic for many years, and when students kept telling me they wanted an automotive program at the high school, I knew this was the right way to give them hands-on experience, build their skills, and prepare them to step into the workforce with pride, craftsmanship, and teamwork."

Promoting pathways for students and Montanans to enter a career, the military, or entrepreneurial efforts has been a top priority for Gov. Gianforte. In August, the governor and the Montana Department of Labor & Industry's State Workforce Innovation Board announced the launch of 406 JOBS as a unifying framework for the state workforce system across the public and private sectors to strengthen the workforce and prepare the next generation.

"Through the 406 JOBS Initiative and programs like Sweet Grass Tech, we're preparing Montanans for good-paying careers, strengthening our workforce, and ensuring our students can build their futures right here in Montana," Gov. Gianforte said.
