Salt Lake City - Today PacifiCorp, the parent company of Rocky Mountain Power, filed an updateto its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) that forecasts how energy will be sourced for the next 20 years. In its update, the utility continues to prop up expensive, outdated fossil fuels, disregarding solutions like solar, wind, battery storage, and geothermal energy that are cheaper, faster, and better. Instead, PacifiCorp is keeping utility bills high while households are already stretched thin by continuing to offer a crutch to fossil fuels.

In its latest update, the utility forgoes renewable energy investments for the next 20 years, delaying the transition to lower-cost renewable energy that could ease economic burden and strengthen local economies. PacifiCorp has also snubbed a sustainable, reliable, and locally promising energy source in geothermal, which is absent from the Company's portfolio despite making groundbreaking progress in Utah. The update continues a concerning but predictable pattern consistent with the 2025 IRP released last April that dramatically slashed planned renewable investments.

In the coming months, the Public Service Commission (PSC) will determine whether to accept the plan, deny it, or approve and reject sections.

"During a time where so many are struggling to make ends meet, we can't afford for PacifiCorp to ignore the energy solutions that are cheaper and more responsible, and that's wind, solar, and next-generation geothermal," said Sierra Club Senior Campaign Organizer, Luis Miranda. "We've been waiting to see PacifiCorp develop a plan that includes affordable and reliable energy that protects public health, develops jobs, and strengthens economies, but that's not something we'll see based on the plan or the updates that PacifiCorp continues to put forth. In the thick of an affordability crisis, communities are counting on PacifiCorp to make the most pragmatic, cost-effective decisions, and it falls short."
