BMI Exclusive: At Home with Carter Lang

Paths cross again as BMI's Jessa Gelt meets up with prolific BMI songwriter/producer Carter Lang in this special follow-up interview.

The two first sat down in December 2023, on the heels of Carter's incredible work on SZA's sophomore studio album, SOS - which went on to win the 2024 GRAMMY for Best Progressive R&B Album just two months later. That era included helping craft the record-breaking smash hit "Kill Bill," as well as lead tracks "Good Days," "I Hate U," "Blind," "Love Language," "Nobody Gets Me," and "Seek & Destroy." Since their initial conversation, Carter's accolades and industry recognition have continued to skyrocket - with six more BMI Awards (bringing his total to 12), two GRAMMY wins to his now ten nominations, and over 30 Billboard-charting songs, including six Billboard #1 hits. Carter has continued his work with SZA, shaping new tracks for SOS (Deluxe): LANA, including the single "Saturn" - which earned him a GRAMMY win for Best R&B Song at this year's 67th Awards. He also crafted standout moments for Lola Young on her 2025 album I'm Only F**king Myself (including the singles "One Thing" and "Not Like That Anymore"), as well as co-producing her breakout single "Messy" - a worldwide #1 hit in multiple countries. He lent his production prowess to powerhouse Renée Rapp on her 2025 album BITE ME, collaborating with BMI writer/producer Omer Fedi on tracks like "Mad" and "I Can't Have You Around Me Anymore."

Expanding his global reach, Carter worked with BLACKPINK's ROSÉ on her 2024 debut solo album rosie, contributing to the single "number one girl" as well as fan favorites like "drinks or coffee." He also teamed with Spanish singer/songwriter Guitarricadelafuente, bringing his genre-bending sensibility into new international territory. His creative fingerprint is all over Justin Bieber's Swag and Swag II, adding to a catalog that already includes hits with Post Malone, Doja Cat, Kali Uchis, and Chance the Rapper.

But above the cultural impact and accolades, Carter cites the friendships he's cultivated through collaboration as most important. BMI caught up with Carter (for the second time) in this exclusive home visit to talk about his creative process, sustaining long-term collaborations, and what's next.
