At approximately 11:06 p.m. on March 24, 2026, the Marion Fire Department was dispatched to the 6200 block of Gateway Drive in Marion for a commercial structure fire involving cardboard on fire inside a building and spreading quickly.
The call initially came in as an Alarm Commercial Fire involving cardboard on fire, which activated the water sprinkler system. Within a minute, the call was upgraded to a Fire Commercial Structure, resulting in the dispatch of additional resources to the fire.
The Fire Department responded quickly. The first arriving apparatus experienced smoke coming from a large overhead door. The occupants evacuated the structure prior to the arrival of the Marion Fire Department. The fire was kept in check and prevented from spreading to the rest of the building due to the activation of the fire protection system.
Crews were able to extinguish visible flames once the overhead door was opened. The Fire Department remained on the scene for hours, separating the large cardboard bales and extinguishing hot spots that were found.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Marion Fire Department was assisted by the Marion Police Department, Cedar Rapids Fire Department, Area Ambulance and the City of Marion Building Division.
