Home Wildfire Fuels Reduction Program Starts in Reno

The Reno Fire Department (RFD), in partnership with State Farm and Waste Management of Northern Nevada, encourages residents to participate in the 2026 Home Wildfire Fuels Reduction Dumpster Program in Reno. This program is a wildfire mitigation initiative that helps residents safely dispose of green waste to enhance their defensible space.

This program provides a temporary 30-yard dumpster to neighborhoods that borders the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Green waste can be classified as the following materials: leaves, brush, small branches, and other vegetation that can contribute to wildfire risk.

"The Reno Fire Department is excited to launch this program again as it continues our efforts to reduce wildfire risk and create defensible space," said Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran. "Being able to help provide a place to get rid of those potential fire fuels helps residents safely manage vegetation around their homes. The more we can collaborate with our citizens to help reduce risk, the safer our entire community will be."

Funding for the program is made possible through a $28,000 State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship Company Grant. In addition, Waste Management committed a $14,000 in-kind donation to support the program.

To help identify areas with the greatest need, residents are encouraged to complete a short online interest form. Responses will help RFD evaluate demand and prioritize neighborhoods for dumpster placement during the upcoming 2026 program season. The interest form will be available now until April 1, 2026.

The survey will ask residents to:

  • Suggest potential dumpster locations in their neighborhood
  • Indicate expected neighborhood participation
  • Identify if their neighborhood has an HOA that may benefit from multiple dumpsters
  • Volunteer to serve as a Neighborhood Sponsor to help coordinate participation and encourage proper green waste disposal

RFD will kick-off the program on April 24, 2026, beginning with dumpsters located at Station 11 located at 7105 Mae Anne Avenue. Additional neighborhood dumpster locations will be announced once responses from the interest form have been reviewed.

Residents can express their interest in the program by visiting RFD's Home Wildfire Fuels Reduction Dumpster Program Resident Interest Form.
