IDOT PROJECT
Rand Road Bridge Replacement Over Des Plaines River
Des Plaines, IL-The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is starting construction for the Rand Road Bridge Replacement over the Des Plaines River on March 16, 2026. The project includes roadway reconstruction and widening, traffic signal modernization, drainage improvements, lighting improvements, water main improvements, and construction of a new multi-use path and landscaping from Ballard Road to Elk Boulevard in Des Plaines.
The current Rand Road bridge has reached the end of its service life. When complete, the new, wider structure will include improved safety features, such as added railings and pedestrian pathways, and will enhance safety and mobility while reducing future congestion. IDOT projects completion in Fall 2027.
The project will be carried out in two phases:
Stage 1
Construction will begin on approximately March 16 (weather permitting), with both eastbound and westbound traffic on Rand Road shifted to the south side and reduced to one lane in each direction to accommodate work zones. Ballard Road and Hawthorne Lane will have new lane configurations for entering and exiting Rand Road during construction.
Stage 2
Construction is set to tentatively begin in the Winter of 2026. Stage 2 will shift eastbound and westbound traffic to the north side and reduce traffic to one lane in each direction.
Lane widths and speed limits will be reduced through the work zone. Traffic will be slowed down to 35 mph on Rand Road from Elk Boulevard to Ballard Road. Lane widths will be narrowed to 9 feet 6 inches through the work zone. A temporary concrete barrier wall will separate traffic from the work zone. The public should also expect various lane shifts on both sides of Rand Road approaching the bridge throughout the project. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Access to all private and commercial properties will be maintained throughout the project's construction.
Motorists should anticipate delays and allow additional time for trips through the area. Drivers are encouraged to pay close attention to detour signs in the work zones, obey posted speed limits, and remain alert for workers and equipment.
