Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Laurel Lee celebrated the passage of her legislation, the bipartisan Energy Emergency Leadership Act, to strengthen federal leadership during energy emergencies and improve the nation's ability to protect America's electric grid from growing cyber, physical, and natural threats. The bill is co-led by Congressman Greg Landsman (OH-01).
The legislation establishes a Senate-confirmed Assistant Secretary for Energy Emergency and Cybersecurity at the Department of Energy, ensuring clear leadership and accountability during emergencies that threaten the nation's energy infrastructure.
Rep. Lee delivered remarks on the House floor ahead of final passage, emphasizing the growing challenges facing the nation's electric grid and the need for strong, accountable leadership during emergencies.
"America's electric grid is facing unprecedented demands at the same time that the threats against it continue to grow," said Congresswoman Laurel Lee."From cyberattacks by foreign adversaries to severe natural disasters, we need accountable leadership that can coordinate an effective federal response when energy emergencies arise. This legislation ensures there is a Senate-confirmed official responsible for coordinating across the federal government when the reliability of our electric grid is at stake."
The United States is experiencing record growth in electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence, data centers, expanded domestic manufacturing, and increased electrification across the economy. At the same time, cyber intrusions by state-sponsored actors, physical attacks on critical infrastructure, and severe weather events continue to underscore the importance of a secure and resilient electric grid.
For states like Florida, where hurricanes can leave millions without power, effective coordination between federal, state, and local partners is essential to restoring critical services and protecting public safety. The Energy Emergency Leadership Act helps ensure the Department of Energy has the leadership necessary to respond quickly and effectively when energy emergencies occur.
The legislation passed the House with bipartisan support after previously advancing unanimously through the House Energy and Commerce Committee, reflecting broad recognition that strengthening America's energy security is a national priority.
