Investigations Underway for Suspicious Fires

Mammoth Lakes, Calif., September 17, 2025 - Over the last couple of weeks, there have been multiple suspicious fires in the Mammoth Lakes area, both on the Inyo National Forest and within the Town of Mammoth Lakes. A multi-agency task force, consisting of investigators from the USDA Forest Service, Law Enforcement and Investigations, and the Town of Mammoth Lakes Police Department, are actively investigating these fires.

Although recent rains have helped to increase moisture in the Forest, the area remains abnormally dry, and it is important to keep all unauthorized fires off of the landscape. As a reminder, the Inyo National Forest is currently in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions prohibit wood and charcoal fires outside of Forest Service provided rings and stoves in developed recreation sites, among other things. Complete information and current restrictions can be found on the Inyo National Forest webpage. The public is asked to be vigilant and immediately report all emergencies to 911.
