IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 24, 2026 Statement from Amy Barela, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico on the State of the Union address Albuquerque, NM - President Donald J. Trump's State of the Union address was more than a speech. It was a declaration that America is back on track. As Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, I am proud to stand behind a President who is delivering real results for hardworking families across this country, including right here in our great state. Republicans prevented a devastating 2.6 trillion dollar tax hike on the American people and instead cut taxes for working families nationwide. That relief is being felt in New Mexico households every single day. At a time when families were stretched thin, President Trump chose growth over government expansion and prosperity over punishment. Reviving Biden's Dying Economy and Helping New Mexicans Thrive The economic turnaround under President Trump is undeniable. The Working Families Tax Cuts are delivering relief, with the average tax refund 11 percent higher year over year. Gas prices are under 3.00 dollars per gallon, a five year low. This is critical in a rural state like New Mexico where families drive long distances for work, school, and healthcare. Inflation has fallen to 2.4 percent, down dramatically from the record high 9 percent under the Biden administration. The creation of 1,000 dollar Trump Accounts for children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 is creating a pathway to prosperity for every American child, including thousands right here in New Mexico. These policies directly affect New Mexicans. Lower fuel costs mean relief for ranchers, oilfield workers, truckers, and small business owners. Lower inflation means seniors on fixed incomes can breathe again. Tax relief means families keep more of what they earn. For that, I am deeply thankful. Securing the Border and Protecting New Mexico As a border state, New Mexico has paid the price for failed Democrat policies for years. President Trump has delivered what career politicians claimed was impossible. Border crossings have plunged to historic lows. Republicans funded completion of the border wall to stop deadly drugs and violent criminals. The Laken Riley Act has resulted in the arrest of over 20,000 violent illegal criminals. New Mexicans understand better than most that border security is not a talking point. It is a matter of public safety. Fentanyl has devastated communities across our state. President Trump's leadership is saving lives. Restoring Strength, Safety, and Peace President Trump has restored peace through strength. He announced the creation of the Golden Dome missile defense system. He negotiated peace efforts that brought hostages home and ended prolonged conflict. He refocused our military on readiness and mission effectiveness. America is respected again. Our enemies think twice. Our allies trust us. A Turning Point for New Mexico For over 90 years, Democrat control has dominated New Mexico politics. We have seen the results, including struggling schools, high crime rates, economic stagnation, and families leaving for opportunity elsewhere. Today, because of President Trump's leadership and Republican action in Washington, we are seeing what is possible when conservative principles are applied. We are seeing lower costs, safer communities, stronger borders, and renewed prosperity. All of President Trump's efforts are directly affecting New Mexicans, and for that I am grateful. Now the path forward is clear. If we want to truly save New Mexico, we must elect more Republicans at every level of government, from the Roundhouse to county commissions, from Congress to local school boards. We need leaders who will partner with President Trump's America First agenda rather than obstruct it. The momentum is real. The results are undeniable. The opportunity is before us. Now all we need to do is send more Republicans to represent us so together we can finally turn New Mexico around and secure a brighter future for generations to come. ### |
