Timucuan Invites Feedback on Plans to Reduce Flood Risks for Kingsley Plantation Seawall and Shoreline Project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve seeks public comment on its evaluation of potential flood impacts related to proposed shoreline and seawall repairs at Kingsley Plantation. The project aims to provide future storm resiliency by extending the seawall to the extent of the cultural landscape.

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian, a Category 3 storm, damaged the existing shoreline and seawall when it made landfall at Kingsley Plantation. The 2023 Disaster Supplement bill provided funding for seawall repair and extension. The repairs will improve safety and visitor experience, while protecting natural and cultural resources.

"We look forward to improving the resiliency of the historic Kingsley Plantation," said Superintendent Chris Hughes. "In the process of repairing the shoreline and seawall, the park seeks to reinforce protection of 6,000 years of human history and the ecology of the associated land and water."

The floodplain statement of findings documents how the NPS has considered flooding impacts to infrastructure and resources. The FSOF is available for a seven-day public review beginning Aug. 31.
