New year, new boo: This is the most popular dating month

The AHS Index is a new way to look at data that illuminates a snapshot of our world today. It is intended to highlight health inequities and spark conversation, debate, outrage, and wonder.

Increase in time Americans spent at home in 2022, compared to 2003, signaling a trend toward staying in: 1 hour, 39 minutes

Percent of Americans aged 50 to 80 who reported feeling socially isolated from others in 2023: 34%

Increase in prevalence of social isolation among adults aged 50 to 80 with a chronic health problem or disability: ~96%

Year that the U.S. surgeon general declared loneliness an "epidemic" that leads to health risks, including elevated risk of premature death, heart disease, stroke, anxiety, depression and dementia: 2023

Decrease in risk of premature death from all causes among people who experience high levels of quality social connection: 50%

Decrease in the number of confidants Americans report they can "discuss important matters" with between 1985 and 2004: ~30%

Increase in likes on the dating app Tinder on the first Sunday in January, dubbed "Dating Sunday" because dating apps record more use on that day than any other day of the year: 22%

Percent of U.S. adults who believe that the computer algorithms employed by dating apps can determine whether two people will fall in love: 21
