Bettendorf Police Department Awards 7 Officers for Exemplary Service October 7, 2025 - The Bettendorf Police Department is acknowledging the dedication, bravery, and exemplary service of seven Bettendorf Police Officers.On Tuesday, October 7, Chief Doug Scott presented awards for Combat Cross, Wounded in Combat, Honorable Service, and Community Service to the following officers: Officers Landry Blunk and Brian Morrisey - Combat Cross/Wounded in CombatOn May 21, 2025, at approximately 1:26 a.m., officers were dispatched to 2602 Cypress Drive, Bettendorf regarding a domestic disturbance involving a stabbing. Bettendorf Police Officers Landry Blunk and Brian Morrisey arrived on scene. Ofc. Blunk encountered a child in the front doorway and two additional children inside the residence and successfully evacuated all three to safety. While securing the children, Officer Blunk heard shouting and the sound of a firearm slide being racked in the basement. Acting on information regarding several occupants and a prior stabbing, Officer Blunk opened the basement door and observed a subject holding a handgun. The subject turned, raised the firearm, and fired two rounds, striking Officer Blunk in the forearm and hip. Officer Blunk returned fire, striking the subject and causing the firearm to drop. One round that struck Officer Blunk also struck Officer Morrisey in the thumb. Officer Blunk exited the residence, administered self-aid, and remained on scene to direct responding officers and provided guidance. Officer Morrisey, despite injury to his dominant hand, maintained coverage of the threat area with his support hand until additional officers arrived. After reinforcements secured the scene, Officer Morrisey checked Officer Blunk for injuries and transported both officers to the hospital for medical treatment. The decisive and courageous actions of Officers Blunk and Morrisey neutralized the armed threat and protected all residents present, including several children. Lieutenant Zach Thomas - Combat CrossOn October 30, 2022, at approximately 2:50 a.m., several law enforcement agencies were conducting patrols in the vicinity of 5200 Grand Avenue, Davenport. Officers initiated a traffic stop, however, the vehicle failed to stop, prompting a pursuit. The pursuit concluded when the vehicle crashed near the intersection of Kimberly Road and Elmore Avenue. Bettendorf Police Sergeant Zach Thomas (promoted to Lieutenant in June 2025) responded to the scene to provide assistance. The vehicle occupants fled on foot. During the subsequent foot pursuit, one of the occupants discharged several rounds from his firearm toward responding officers. Sergeant Thomas, in conjunction with five other officers, fired their firearms, striking the suspect and ending the threat to the public. Sergeant Thomas's decisive actions and bravery during this incident were instrumental in neutralizing the threat and ultimately preserving the lives of fellow officers on the scene. Officer Derrick Said - Honorable ServiceOn June 26, 2025, at approximately 12:56 a.m., Officer Derrick Said responded to a call on the I-74 Bridge regarding a suicidal female who was threatening to jump. Officer Said promptly arrived in the area and began searching the pedestrian path for the individual. He successfully located the female and observed that she was in significant distress, having climbed over the railing and clinging to a light post. Officer Said remained calm and maintained continuous, highly effective communication with the female while coordinating with other officers on scene to establish potential life-saving measures. He exhibited exceptional poise, patience, and empathy, connecting with the individual on a personal level through active listening. Through his deliberate and compassionate interventions, and with the assistance of fellow officers, Officer Said was able to convince the female to accept help and safely return over the railing. His professionalism and courageous actions directly contributed to a positive outcome for the individual involved, demonstrating a high level of skill and dedication to preserving life. Officer Herve Denain - Honorable ServiceOn February 19, 2025 at approximately 5:29 p.m., Officer Herve Denain was on routine patrol in the Wilderness Pointe area near Criswell Street in Bettendorf when the Scott Emergency Communication Center received a medical call regarding a man down at a nearby address. The call originated from the Scott County Sheriff's Department. Upon arrival, the homeowner reported that a relative had collapsed while skating on a pond in the backyard. Officer Denain, being the closest law enforcement unit, promptly responded to the scene. The location where the individual collapsed was approximately 100+ yards from the residence, and the ambient temperature at the time was 7 degrees Fahrenheit. Officer Denain located the male victim in the backyard and immediately assumed CPR compressions from the homeowner, who was exhausted from performing resuscitation efforts. Thanks to the initial intervention by the homeowner and the continued efforts of Officer Denain, the male victim was successfully revived by arriving Fire personnel. Officer Ashley Guffey & Records Specialist Sara Stolley - Community ServiceIn 2018, Officers Ashley Guffey and Sara Stolley launched the Social Awareness Patch Program in partnership with the Pink Patch Project, a charitable initiative supporting Breast Cancer Awareness. The program has been highly successful, generating a significant and positive impact on both the police department and the community. After seven years of supporting Breast Cancer Awareness, the program has expanded to include campaigns promoting Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, Autism Awareness, and Heart Health. Recently, the program has further grown to include merchandise sales, enhancing its capacity to raise both awareness and funds for these critical causes. All proceeds generated through these initiatives have been donated to local organizations dedicated to improving the lives of Quad City residents. Officers Guffey and Stolley's tireless commitment and passion have been central to the program's success, effectively raising awareness on a variety of social issues and making lasting, positive contributions to the well-being of the community.
