Greenville Plans for Long-Term Growth

Phase II of Plan in Progress; Public Survey Live; Public Meeting Set for May 15

As downtown Greenville continues to thrive and expand, the City is taking proactive steps to ensure its transportation infrastructure keeps pace. With a steady rise in both residential and commercial development, city engineers have officially launched Phase II of the Downtown Transportation Master Plan (DTMP) - a strategic initiative aimed at preparing for Greenville's long-term growth.

"These are traffic safety projects, pedestrian safety projects, bicycle safety projects," says Clint Link, Engineering Director. "As our City is growing and our Central Business District is growing, we've got to be able to identify the corridors that we need to be focusing on to address operational efficiency within the transportation system and safety improvements."

The Phase II study will analyze future trends to identify transportation needs for the future. The study will prioritize improvements that address traffic congestion, enhance safety and support alternative modes of travel in the central business district.

Phase I was completed in 2019 and focused on short-term transportation improvements intended to improve safety and congestion. A selection of completed projects resulting from Phase I include:

  • Retiming of traffic lights along Church Street, Academy Street, Stone Avenue, and Laurens Road
  • Installation of dual left-turn lanes from Stone Avenue/Laurens Road onto I-385 Southbound
  • Addition of a second right-turn lane from East North Street/385 to Academy Street

Phase II Key Milestones:

  • May 1, 2025 - Public survey opens, offering residents a chance to weigh in
  • May 15, 2025 - Public meeting at Unity Park Welcome Center (111 Welborn St.), 4:30-6:30 p.m.
  • August 2025 - Final report submitted to the City's Engineering Department

City officials are encouraging residents, commuters, and stakeholders to get involved and help shape the future of transportation in downtown Greenville.
