Outstanding work by Violent Crimes Division detectives on Friday led to the apprehension of five teenagers in a stolen Hyundai Elantra that was reportedly driving around Madison with a rifle being waved out a window. An observant neighbor provided detectives with the license plate number, and they were able to locate the stolen Elantra, after searching for some time, parked at Neely's Bend Elementary School.
The Elantra was taken from Timberlake Circle in Antioch overnight Thursday.
All five male occupants, three age 15 and two age 14, were taken into custody nearby. A stolen pistol, confirmed to be from a recent burglary of a licensed firearm dealer, was recovered from inside the Elantra.
During their interviews with detectives, the teens confessed to their involvements in several recent crimes, including other firearm dealer burglaries.
All five were charged in Juvenile Court with motor vehicle theft, juvenile handgun possession and carrying a weapon on school property.
A sixth minor, a 13-year-old who was just arrested on December 9th with nine other teens from two stolen vehicles, was also implicated during the juveniles' interviews. During a consent search of his home, two stolen firearms were recovered.
The 13-year-old confessed to being involved in a recent smash and grab of Lions Vapor Smoke Shop, 843 Hamilton Crossing, where a stolen Kia Soul rammed into the front door and merchandise was stolen. Several unopened vape products were recovered from his bedroom during yesterday's search.
He is now charged in Juvenile Court with burglary.
Additional charged for all six teens are anticipated.
