The Biggest Threat To Launch Success Isn’t Your Strategy

Why Pharma Launch Planning Is Really About Alignment, Not Execution

When a launch falls short of expectations, teams often look at the usual suspects: messaging, targeting, market access, competitive pressure, or field execution. But many launch challenges start much earlier.

Misaligned priorities. Unclear roles. Compliance brought in too late. Medical affairs and commercial teams working toward the same goal but operating independently. The result is slower decision-making, duplicated effort, inconsistent stakeholder experiences, and missed opportunities during one of a brand's most important moments.

That was a central theme during a recent Xtalks webinar featuring Laura Haydock, Vice President and Head of Global Compliance at Calvista Pharmaceuticals, Kirsten Duncan, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Nuvalent, and Brian O'Donnell, President, Commercial, at Amplity. Their message was clear: successful pharma launch planning begins long before launch day. It starts with alignment across medical, commercial, and compliance teams.

Why Medical Affairs, Commercial & Compliance Must Move As One

Today's launch environment is more complex than ever. Timelines are compressed, stakeholder expectations continue to rise, and organizations are expected to demonstrate value earlier in a product's lifecycle.

In response, medical affairs, commercial, and compliance teams can no longer operate independently. Decisions made by one function increasingly impact the others, making cross-functional alignment a foundational part of effective pharma launch planning.

"We've witnessed a real shift to true interdependence," said Duncan. "Medical affairs and commercial are no longer working in parallel. We must rely on each other to succeed."

Medical affairs brings scientific expertise, evidence generation, and clinical credibility. Commercial teams focus on customer engagement, access, and adoption. Compliance helps ensure these two teams can execute confidently within clearly defined guardrails. Together, they create the coordinated experience that healthcare providers expect.

The challenge is that stakeholders don't see separate departments. They see one company. Every interaction contributes to their overall perception of the product and the organization behind it.

Alignment Breaks Down When Compliance Comes In Too Late

According to the panelists, alignment often breaks down when responsibilities, decision-making processes, and ways of working aren't established early in launch planning. As a result, teams may approach stakeholders inconsistently, duplicate efforts, or hesitate in the field because expectations haven't been clearly defined.

"We often see duplication of effort," said O'Donnell. "HCP customers aren't quite sure why one role is coming in and then later another role is coming in and asking similar questions."

The solution isn't simply more meetings or more communication. It's bringing all critical stakeholders, including compliance, into the planning process earlier.

"It's critical when you're preparing for these launches that you're aligning ahead of the launch, ensuring that you're bringing compliance to the table at the outset," said Haydock.

For many organizations, compliance is still viewed as a checkpoint at the end of the process. The panelists challenged that mindset. Rather than slowing progress, compliance helps create clarity. By establishing guardrails early, organizations can move faster, reduce uncertainty, and execute more confidently when launch pressures begin to build.

Duncan encouraged attendees to rethink the role of legal, regulatory, and compliance teams altogether.

"I'd really like to encourage a shift in thinking to looking to legal, regulatory, and compliance as enablers, not barriers," she said. "The compliance role is to help create clarity."

Strong Pharma Launch Planning Starts Before Launch Day

The organizations that consistently execute successful launches aren't waiting until launch day to get aligned. They're defining roles, establishing governance, clarifying decision-making processes, and creating opportunities for medical affairs, commercial, and compliance teams to collaborate long before the first customer interaction.

That doesn't mean every conversation is easy.

"If you don't have friction, it's a good signal that you may not break through or drive change," said O'Donnell.

In fact, healthy debate often leads to better decisions. The goal isn't to eliminate friction. It's to surface questions, address risks, and create alignment before they become execution challenges. Successful launches aren't driven by one function. They're driven by teams working together toward a shared objective.

Turning Pharma Launch Planning Into Action

Knowing alignment matters is one thing. Building it is another.

As launch timelines shrink and internal teams face increasing demands, many organizations need additional expertise and capacity to bridge the gap between strategy and execution. Amplity helps life sciences organizations strengthen pharma launch planning and launch readiness through specialized outsourced medical affairs, commercial, and customer engagement teams to drive smarter commercialization across the product lifecycle.

From MSLs and sales teams to launch planning, field execution, insight generation from our AI platform, and stakeholder engagement, Amplity provides the expertise, scalability, and operational support needed to help teams work together more effectively and execute with confidence.
