WASHINGTON - Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, issued the following statement on issues related to the Committee's jurisdiction after the White House released President Trump's proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2027.
"Once again, President Trump's budget demonstrates how his Administration favors the wealthy over working families. This proposal would raise the cost of living, undermine our institutions, and threaten the future of public education. This budget is more of the same from a President who is prioritizing a war of choice over Americans' welfare. As President Trump said earlier this week, 'We're fighting wars […] It's not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things.'
"The President's budget fails to deliver for students, teachers, or families. It continues the illegal dismantling of the Department of Education, and eliminates funding for preschoolers with disabilities, teacher training grants, and Minority-Serving Institutions (including Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Predominantly Black Institutions), which are traditionally underserved in higher education.
"The budget also slashes funding for public health programs at the Department of Health and Human Services, including vital funding for mental health. This budget also defunds the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps families afford heating and cooling. As energy costs rise due to President Trump's wars, these cuts will make it even harder for families to get by.
"Working families are struggling in an economy that is not serving them. President Trump's budget proposal attacks workers and small businesses by undermining workforce development programs at the Department of Labor. Programs, such as Job Corps, help displaced workers, veterans, and people with disabilities get trained and hired. Without them, many workers will struggle to provide for their families.
"Ultimately, the President's budget proposal is disappointing, but not surprising. Committee Democrats are committed to picking up the slack and fighting for students, workers, and families, even when the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans refuse to do so."
