Amo Hosts Federal Security Funding Forum with Rhode Island’s Nonprofit and Faith-Based Organizations

PROVIDENCE, RI - TODAY, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) led a conversation about opportunities for faith-based and nonprofit organizations to apply for security funding through the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP).
"Everyone should be able to gather, worship, and learn in safety. That's why it's so important that we make sure groups apply to the Nonprofit Security Grant Program," said Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI). "It was great to see representatives from so many Rhode Island nonprofit organizations come out to learn more about the program and how they can access federal funding. I'm going to keep fighting to stop Trump from cutting this program and make sure resources are available to protect our faith-based and nonprofits so all Rhode Islanders and Americans can live free of the fear of violence."
Congressman Amo has consistently advocated for the essential security program. He co-led a letter of more than 78 House Democrats calling on the Trump administration to stop the pause in drawdown funding for the program and led a bipartisan effort supported by over 130 Members of Congress requesting $500 million for the NSGP for Fiscal Year 2026. The briefing was hosted by the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island and attended by representatives from the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIMA), refugee advocacy groups, charitable organizations serving vulnerable populations, and faith-based groups, as well as state and local leaders.
Background
In March, Congressman Amoco-led a letter signed by 79 Members of Congress that urged the Trump administration to lift a pause on drawdowns for federal grant funding through the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), including the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP).
In May, Congressman Amo led a letter signed by over 130 Members of Congress requesting $500 million in federal funding for the NSGP, the highest request since the creation of the grant program.
Last year, alongside the Rhode Island Delegation, Congressman Amo delivered $2.2 million in federal funding to nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island to protect faith-based institutions that have seen an uptick in threats in violence.
The NSGP provides funding for target hardening and other physical security enhancements and activities to nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of terrorist attack. NSGP-eligible nonprofits are 501(c)(3) organizations determined to be at risk of a terrorist attack by DHS, with the input of the state emergency agencies. NSGP recipients may use funding for any of the following purposes:
  • "target hardening activities, including physical security enhancement equipment and inspection and screening systems";
  • "fees for security training relating to physical security and cybersecurity, target hardening, terrorism awareness, and employee awareness"; and
  • "any other appropriate activity, including cybersecurity resilience activities, as determined by the [DHS] Administrator."
Rhode Island nonprofits interested in NSGP funding can check the application deadlines and apply through the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency's website.
