Boston (May 28, 2026) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) applauded a recent successful committee vote on their bill amending the 1955 Long-Term Leasing Act to authorize leases of up to 99 years for land in the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Reservation and land held in trust for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). This vote moved the bill out of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and onto the Senate floor.
"We thank the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs for their work on this important issue to resolve a disparity between leasing authorizations for federally recognized Tribes," said the lawmakers. "We look forward to continuing to champion the progress of this bill."
Senators Markey and Warren have worked to secure key resources for Massachusetts Tribes, including $1,152,000 for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's Plaza Del Sol Transitional Housing Project through the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Bill. They also secured $500,000 for the Aquinnah to advance Tribal broadband access and $155,000 for the Aquinnah's affordable housing activities under the Indian Housing Block Grant Program.
