Marcello Hernández Names JCU Scholarship Recipient

In the spring, Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernández '19 announced the creation of the Bo & Tom - Marcello A. Hernández '19 Scholarship at John Carroll University. Now, he's named his inaugural recipient: Sam Herr '26, a Communication major, men's club hockey player, photographer, and ROTC member.

The scholarship opportunity is available to one senior JCU student each year who is interested in a career in comedy, entertainment, or content creation, and most importantly, it includes personal mentorship from Marcello Hernández himself.

Herr is eager to get started. "I see this scholarship as a chance to level up," Herr stated in the essay component of his scholarship application. "Marcello, you've been where I am. Same school, same age, same kind of desire for more. I want to learn how you made the leap."

The surprise announcement came during a Zoom call Herr thought was for a men's soccer project with head coach Dejan "Deki" Mladenovic. Instead, Hernández appeared on screen to deliver the good news.

"It was awesome!" said Herr. "Seeing Marcello excel in his career and how he started at John Carroll showed me that the possibilities JCU brings are endless. If Marcello can do it, I can too."

In the coming months, Herr will meet with Hernández and gain insight from a John Carroll grad whose career is on the rise. He looks forward to learning how to build a career in content creation that blends his interests in sports and entertainment.

But first, he will answer another calling: The United States Army. After graduation, Herr will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

"I've always felt called to serve my country. In the past few years I've done a lot to prepare myself to continue this journey. After serving, I plan to pursue a career in content creation," said Herr.

In the video portion of his application, Herr reflected on his journey as a creator so far. He explained that while he's content with the work he has produced, he isn't satisfied. That drive, he said, is why mentorship from Hernández will be invaluable as he works to elevate his craft.

"I knew Sam would be a great fit for this scholarship," said Rory O'Neil, Executive Director of Alumni Engagement at JCU. "He's talented, dedicated, and not afraid to put himself out there. With Marcello's mentorship, he has the chance to take his creativity to the next level."

For Herr, the scholarship is more than a financial boost. It's proof that the JCU network is alive and working, connecting students with alumni who are shaping industries and giving back.
