EU-Mercosur: BusinessEurope urges provisional application following Argentina and Uruguay’s ratification

Yesterday, Argentina and Uruguay announced the ratification of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement (EMPA) and the Interim Trade Agreement (iTA), marking an inflection point in the deal's history.

BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer said: "Argentina and Uruguay's expedited ratification demonstrates a clear commitment by the region to strengthening ties with Europe. It is now up to the European Union to respond with the same level of determination and proceed swiftly with the provisional application of the Interim Trade Agreement.

European businesses cannot afford further delays in the implementation of a deal that delivers clear benefits, supports growth, enhances competitiveness, and strengthens supply chain resilience while reducing dependencies, especially on critical raw materials.

It is in the interest of the EU as a whole to diversify its trade relations, and Mercosur represents a strategic and reliable partner in achieving that objective. Implementing this partnership is a strategic, economic, and geopolitical necessity. BusinessEurope therefore urges the European Commission to proceed swiftly with the provisional application of the EU-Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement."
