The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, participated in a commemorative meeting on June 28, 2026, in Luxembourg to honour the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica. This event took place in Tony Neuman Park and marked the eighteenth annual commemoration organized by the Committee for Srebrenica Luxembourg. It underscored the ongoing commitment of the Bosnian diaspora to preserving the culture of memory, truth, and justice.
This year's commemoration held particular significance as it was the first official event at the newly built memorial dedicated to the genocide victims in Srebrenica. This memorial was erected in collaboration with the City of Luxembourg and was ceremonially unveiled last year.
In his address to the audience, Minister Konaković emphasized that the monument serves as a permanent symbol of the shared responsibility to uphold the truth and protect the dignity of the victims. He stressed that remembering Srebrenica is not solely Bosnia and Herzegovina's obligation; it is a shared European and human responsibility.
He expressed gratitude toward the Committee for Srebrenica Luxembourg, the City of Luxembourg, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for their long-standing support in preserving the truth about the genocide. He noted that their support is a reflection of friendship towards Bosnia and Herzegovina and a tribute to the victims and the values upon which modern Europe is built. Minister Konaković reminded the audience that Luxembourg was among the first European countries to adopt a parliamentary resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica, and, in 2024, it co-sponsored a United Nations General Assembly resolution declaring July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica.
Regarding the importance of preserving the culture of memory, Minister Konaković stated that Srebrenica remains a wound for Bosnia and Herzegovina and serves as a test of conscience for all humanity.
He remarked, "Genocide denial is not a differing opinion. It is a continuation of injustice towards the victims. Therefore, combating denial is not merely a struggle for the past, but for a future where international law and established judicial facts prevail over political attempts to undermine them."
He extended special gratitude and deep respect to the Mothers of Srebrenica and Podrinje, commending them for maintaining their dignity and determination in the fight for truth and justice, despite their unimaginable loss. Alongside Minister Konaković, Luc Frieden, the President of the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg; Munira Subašić, President of the Association "Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclave"; Marc Angel, Vice President of the European Parliament; and representatives from the Committee for Srebrenica Luxembourg spoke at the commemorative meeting, collectively reaffirming the importance of international support in preserving the truth, the culture of memory, and the dignity of the Srebrenica genocide victims.
Before the commemoration, Minister Konaković had met with representatives of the Bosnian Herzegovinian community in Luxembourg at an informal gathering organized by the Committee for Srebrenica Luxembourg. They discussed the current political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country's European path, and ways to improve cooperation with the diaspora. They also addressed issues of importance to Bosnian citizens living in Luxembourg, such as administrative concerns, exercising voting rights, and strengthening cultural, educational, and economic ties with their homeland.
