Rep. Eric Bell Introduces Bill to Establish a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Healthcare

ATLANTA - State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) recently introduced House Bill 1100, legislation that would create a Healthcare Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (H-SPLOST), which would provide for a new special purpose local option sales tax dedicated for healthcare purposes.

"Currently, more than 50 counties in Georgia lack a hospital, and more than one million Georgians are uninsured." said Rep. Bell. "Every community in Georgia deserves access to high quality healthcare, and this bill will equip local leaders with a much-needed tool to fund healthcare infrastructure and workforce development. Expanding access to healthcare remains a top priority for Democrats, and this legislation presents one of many steps our state can take to achieve this goal."

House Bill 1100 is sponsored by Rep. Bell and co-sponsored by State Representatives Spencer Frye (D-Athens), Bryce Berry (D-Atlanta), Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta), Patty Marie Stinson (D-Butler) and Yasmin Neal (D-Jonesboro). If passed, the bill would create a ballot referendum for local voters to decide if the H-SPLOST should be imposed.

Representative Eric Bell represents the citizens of District 75, which includes a portion of Clayton County. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2023 and currently serves on the Defense & Veterans Affairs, Human Relations & Aging and Small Business Development committees.
