John Flaherty Receives National Award

John Flaherty, a lecturer in LMU's College of Communication and Fine Arts and the founding director of the Pastoral Liturgy and Pastoral Music Certification Programs at LMU's Center for Religion and Spirituality, is being recognized by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians for his extraordinary contributions to the Church. Flaherty will receive the Jubilate Deo Award, which honors individuals who have made a substantial impact on the development of pastoral liturgy.

"I accept this award with sincere humility and a heart overflowing with gratitude," said Flaherty.

Flaherty, who has spent more than 45 years forming others for service in pastoral ministry, joined the CRS faculty in 2009, where he has prepared more than 350 ministers who now serve communities across the country. Prior to this role, Flaherty spent more than 30 years in Campus Ministry leadership, creating a liturgical and music formation model that supported the LMU worshiping community. He also prepared undergraduate students to serve as parish ministers, Catholic school music teachers, and church leaders upon graduation. Flaherty orchestrates many of the most significant liturgical celebrations at LMU and beyond.

On a national stage, Flaherty has contributed to major liturgical and prayer events, including supporting prayer services for former President Joe Biden, members of the military, firefighters and archdioceses around the globe.

"I am deeply honored and profoundly humbled to receive this remarkable recognition. As I reflect upon the distinguished list of past recipients, I am in awe," Flaherty shared. "Many of these individuals are those whose music, writings, teachings, and very presence have not only inspired me but helped shape the person and minister I have become."

While grateful for the acknowledgment, Flaherty emphasizes that his life's work has never been driven by recognition. "My goal is to help others find the love, passion, and compassion to love people into who God is calling them to be," he said. "This is one of the most important ways we pay homage to the people who have loved us, taught us, and mentored us."

The 2026 NPM Major Awards will be presented during the 48th NPM National Convention, taking place July 19-24, 2026, at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
