Tangerang, 21 May 2026 : ERIA signed two strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Pertamina - Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company - during the 50th Indonesian Petroleum Association Convention and Exhibition (IPA Convex 2026), held in Tangerang on 21 May 2026.
The first MoU, signed between Pertamina and ERIA, focuses on research collaboration and joint studies on the development of sustainable energy transition pathways. The partnership seeks to support Indonesia's transition toward a more sustainable and resilient energy system through policy research, economic analysis, and knowledge-exchange initiatives.
The co-operation will also involve targeted seminars, workshops, and technical exchanges aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration on sustainable energy development. Under the partnership, ERIA will work closely with the Pertamina Energy Institute, the company's think tank, to facilitate the implementation of the joint initiatives.
The second MoU, signed between ERIA, Pertamina, and its subsidiary Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), focuses on the development of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies within Pertamina's upstream oil and gas working areas. The collaboration will encompass technical and non-technical studies on CO2 capture, transportation, storage evaluation, regulatory frameworks, business schemes, market potential, and carbon credit opportunities. The partnership is expected to support Indonesia's efforts to strengthen CCUS/CCS implementation and advance low-carbon technology development in the country.
The signing of the two MoUs highlights the growing significance of strategic collaboration between industry stakeholders and research institutions in advancing Indonesia's broader energy transition agenda. As the country continues to pursue decarbonisation while safeguarding energy security and economic growth, partnerships centred on sustainable energy development and carbon management technologies are becoming increasingly indispensable.
The collaborations between ERIA, Pertamina, and PHE are also expected to contribute to broader regional discussions on low-carbon development and energy resilience across ASEAN and East Asia. By combining policy expertise, technical research, and industry experience, the partnerships aim to support actionable and regionally relevant approaches to energy transition and decarbonisation.
