NATCA Representatives Collaborate Globally at IFATCA’s Technical and Operations Meeting in Madrid

Oct 18, 2024

The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations (IFATCA) held its first Technical and Operations (TOC) committee meeting of this cycle from Sept. 24-26 in Madrid, Spain. NATCA was proudly represented by TOC Chair Jaymi Steinberg and Betsy Beaumont who collaborated with international colleagues to address pressing issues in aviation safety.

This meeting was notable for its joint session with the International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA) Air Traffic Services committee. The collaboration allowed for the exploration of topics of shared concern, including environmental impacts, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) spoofing and jamming, and advancements in interval management - highlighted by Beaumont's paper on the subject. These discussions culminated in a joint statement on GNSS interference, emphasizing the need for continued global vigilance and coordination to protect critical navigation systems.

Additionally, NATCA representatives took part in two days of TOC meetings where they reviewed essential technical policies, including Barometric Vertical Navigation (Baro-VNAV), sustainable taxiing initiatives, and protocols for communication failures. The participation of NATCA in such global discussions is vital as it ensures that the voice and expertise of U.S. air traffic controllers are present in shaping international standards. This joint session with IFALPA demonstrates the importance of cooperation between controllers and pilots in creating a safer, more efficient airspace for all. The TOC thanked Kimmo Koivula and Ignacio Baca for their invaluable assistance in organizing the meeting and to Indra for hosting the group.
