Spring Pass Clearing Update #3

Published: Apr 08, 2026

Sonora Pass (State Route 108)

Tuolumne County - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be relocating the eastbound State Route 108/Sonora Pass closure gate out to Kennedy Meadows as of 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

The Caltrans Longbarn Maintenance Crew has continued to make good progress clearing Sonora Pass this season. Due to the warm weather and favorable road conditions Caltrans has made significant progress with pass clearing operations this season and able to re-open Sonora Pass out to Kennedy Meadows in time for trout season.

State Route 108/Sonora Pass will remain closed to eastbound traffic at the Kennedy Meadows closure gate through the next series of storms. While Caltrans cannot specify the exact date Sonora Pass will formally reopen to traffic for the season, we will however be providing weekly pass clearing updates to the public.

For the latest road closure and traffic conditions go to Quickmap.dot.ca.gov, download our QuickMap mobile app, tune your car radio to Caltrans Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) at 530 AM, 1610 AM, or call the Caltrans Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).

Caltrans urges motorists to still use caution while driving the Sierra Mountain pass routes and watch for icy road surfaces in the overnight and early morning hours. For helpful information on winter driving conditions click on the link below:

Motorists should expect 5-to-10-minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. All work is scheduled to occur as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment/materials, and construction-related issues.

For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert. Caltrans also reminds motorists to #KnowBeforeYouGo by checking QuickMaps on your mobile device or visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for real-time highway conditions.
