Newcastle disease

Newcastle disease

19.3.2026

Question for written answer E-001158/2026
to the Commission
Rule 144
Daniel Buda (PPE)

For three decades there were no outbreaks of Newcastle disease in Germany, but the country is once again experiencing outbreaks on poultry farms, including on a large holding in Brandenburg, where over 375 000 laying hens have been infected and are about to be slaughtered[1]. This situation has placed additional pressure on egg production, in a context where the egg industry is already warning of an imbalance between supply and demand. The disease has spread despite the vaccination of poultry being mandatory. The competent authorities have stressed that vaccination and strict biosecurity measures continue to be essential in order contain the virus and reduce economic losses in the poultry sector.

Against this backdrop:

  • 1.What is the Commission's assessment of the potential impact of these outbreaks on egg production and food security in the European Union?
  • 2.Does the Commission intend to make preventive vaccination mandatory across the EU and to strengthen coordination on prevention, vaccination and biosecurity in order to reduce the risk of outbreaks spreading and to safeguard the stability of the European poultry sector?
  • 3.What measures is the Commission planning to support farmers affected by outbreaks of Newcastle disease, including when it comes to compensating them for economic losses and ensuring continuity of production?
