For three decades there were no outbreaks of Newcastle disease in Germany, but the country is once again experiencing outbreaks on poultry farms, including on a large holding in Brandenburg, where over 375 000 laying hens have been infected and are about to be slaughtered[1]. This situation has placed additional pressure on egg production, in a context where the egg industry is already warning of an imbalance between supply and demand. The disease has spread despite the vaccination of poultry being mandatory. The competent authorities have stressed that vaccination and strict biosecurity measures continue to be essential in order contain the virus and reduce economic losses in the poultry sector.
