Launched in 2003, the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) program was created by the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) with the service being offered through Alabama's 13 statewide Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs). The ADRC program is a one-stop shop for senior adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers seeking information and assistance with long-term support services (LTSS), benefits, and other resources that help people live with independence and dignity in their own homes and communities.
In 2015 Alabama was recognized nationally as an ADRC leader and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) awarded the Alabama Medicaid Agency a competitive grant for Alabama to continue offering unbiased LTSS and benefits counseling to senior adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers in the state. The "One Door Alabama" initiative builds upon the ADRCs to continue streamlining access to LTSS options. Finding the right services can be daunting for individuals and their family members. Through "One Door Alabama," multiple Alabama state and community agencies coordinate to ensure that people will have the opportunity to access information and one-on-one counseling of options available across all agencies serving Alabama's communities.
Today all 13 AAAs are certified ADRCs covering all 67 counties in the state. Not only are the ADRCs the entry point for resource information and benefits screening, but they are also an entry point for professionals, caregivers, family members, and friends seeking resources and assistance on behalf of clients or loved ones. Everyone seeking assistance is screened utilizing a universal screening tool that allows the person seeking assistance to have their information captured immediately without needing to repeat the information if, later, additional resource counseling is needed. Referrals for medication assistance, Medicare/Medicaid counseling, transportation, homecare assistance, meals, and support for caregivers are made on behalf of the individual needing help. The ADRCs provide follow-up and offer short-term case management to those who choose to utilize assistance with completing application(s) for services and benefits.
Here are just a few personal stories from our ADRCs:
ADSS and the 13 ADRCs strive to support individuals with the tools necessary to make informed decisions and maintain independence in the community of their choice.
