Get Ready for Bushfire Season in Georges River

18/09/2025

As bushfire season approaches, Georges River Council is urging residents to take action this Get Ready Weekend, 20-21 September 2025, to protect their homes and families.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) recommends households discuss their Bush Fire Survival Plan, prepare their home, understand fire alert levels, and stay up to date with local emergency information. Plans can be completed online in minutes or discussed with family members to decide on actions if a fire threatens.

A well-prepared home is more likely to withstand a bushfire or ember attack. To reduce risk, residents are encouraged to regularly remove fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris from around their property. Additional steps include maintaining gardens and lawns, clearing gutters and debris, repairing damaged roofs and windows, and keeping home and contents insurance up to date.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Having a plan and preparing your home is the most effective way to protect your family, property, and neighbours during bushfire season.

"Council is also taking steps to reduce risk, working with the Canterbury-Bankstown Georges River Bushfire Management Committee to support the Bushcare team in maintaining Asset Protection Zones to keep our community safe.

"I encourage all residents to use the resources provided by the NSW Rural Fire Service and Get Ready."
