Media Alert: Defence and Police Committees to Assess Implementation of Operation Prosper in Cape Town
Parliament, Thursday, 13 August 2026 - The Joint Standing Committee on Defence and the Portfolio Committee on Police will tomorrow, Friday 14 August undertake a joint oversight visit to assess the implementation of Operation Prosper in Cape Town.
The committees will focus on living conditions of deployed personnel, operational challenges and cooperation between the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The oversight follows concerns and public discussions around the deployment of SANDF personnel in the Western Cape and the conditions under which members are carrying out their duties as part of Operation Prosper.
The visit will provide an opportunity to the committees to engage directly with deployed personnel and operational commanders and to assess the effectiveness of cooperation between the SANDF and SAPS in addressing gang violence.
The oversight programme will commence at AFB Ysterplaat, where they will inspect the living conditions of Operation Prosper personnel and engage with deployed SANDF members including junior officers and non-commissioned officers on the challenges and successes experienced during the deployment.
The committees will proceed to Mitchell's Plain where they will engage with key policing structures and community representatives as part of the oversight programme.

Time: 09:00 -10:30
Venue: Air Force Base, Ysterplaat; Inspection of Operation Prosper personnel living conditions and engagements with SANDF on deployment challenges and successes.
11:00 -13:15
Venue: Mitchell's Plain Police Station; engagements with SAPS Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) and Tactical Response Team (TRT) personnel on gang violence, Operation Prosper and cooperation with the SANDF, followed by engagements with the Community Policing Forum at Mitchell's Plain Police Station.
