SACRAMENTO- On Monday, Speaker Robert Rivas welcomed California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero to the Assembly Chamber for the annual State of the Judiciary address.
"At a time when courts across the country are increasingly drawn into political debate, the importance of an independent and impartial judiciary has never been clearer. Here in California, we are proud that our courts remain guided not by politics, but by the rule of law. That independence is essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring justice is applied fairly for all," Speaker Rivas said.
Speaker Rivas joined Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President pro Tempore Monique Limón, constitutional officers and legislative leaders from the Senate and Assembly for the annual address.
The State of the Judiciary is an opportunity for the Chief Justice to highlight the work of California's judicial branch, including its ongoing efforts to ensure equality in the courts and defense of Californians' constitutional rights and freedoms.
During the address, Chief Justice Guerrero outlined priorities for the year and reaffirmed the judiciary's commitment to fairness, transparency, and the rule of law.
The Speaker, Chief Justice, Governor and Pro Tem also issued a joint statement to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, highlighting the enduring importance of the nation's founding ideals and affirming their shared commitment to those principles:
"This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which established our great nation with three separate and coequal branches of government. As the leaders of California's three branches of government, we affirm our continued dedication to safeguarding the rule of law, and to upholding a government that serves all Californians."
Speaker Rivas delivered remarks at the Joint Convention, as well:
California's judicial system serves more than 40 million people and handles thousands of cases each year, making it the largest and one of the most influential court systems in the nation.
