Tennis by the Numbers: Venus Williams’ Career Wins, Grand Slams, and How the Legends Stack Up

Some legends retire. Others reinvent. Venus Williams is proving she belongs in the second category. At 45, she's back on court after more than a year away from singles, stretching her career across four different decades. From her breakthrough in the late '90s to her return this summer in Washington, DC, and now the US Open, Venus is reminding the sport and its spectators that her story isn't over. And thanks to the data, we can see that story in full.

A career that bends time

Think about it: 824 career wins. Seven Grand Slam titles. 49 championships in total. Venus has been winning matches since dial-up internet was still a thing, and she's still winning them now in the TikTok era.

The data shows her dominance wasn't just about one tournament or one season. Wimbledon: 90 match wins. 80 at the US Open. Even across surfaces and decades, her consistency jumps off the screen.

Explore the story behind the stats

We've built an interactive dashboard that lets you dive deep into Venus' career, and then toggle to any player you like. We like to think it's a self-updating tennis almanac.

Before we get too far, a quick peek behind the curtain.

The last time I tried this, I manually downloaded a bunch of match files from Git. Not exactly elegant. This time, I called in some backup: I asked Claude to write me Python code that could combine all the history files back to 1968 (something Jace McLean, fellow Domo on Data-er, probably could've done in five minutes back when we first pulled this, but not me).

I dropped the code into Jupyter in Domo and-boom-I had the whole history in one place. Which brings me to the perils of relying on someone else for data: our original source stopped updating after 2024. That's why the dashboard defaults to Venus, but from there you can toggle to whoever you want to explore.

What stands out about Venus Williams tennis stats

When you pull up her numbers, a few things catch the eye:

  • She shows up at Slams. Her Grand Slam win percentage (76 percent) is higher than her overall win rate (74 percent). That's the definition of rising to the occasion.
  • Grass queen. 90 wins at Wimbledon is more than at any other tournament. It's proof of just how much her power game translated on grass.
  • Longevity = unmatched. Her first wins came before some of today's top players were even born. And yet here she is, earning a wildcard, still playing on Ashe.

Those stats are part of a bigger legacy, one you can now explore side by side with the other greats of the game.

A fan guide to tennis championship stats

We didn't build this dashboard just to admire Venus (though that alone is worth it). We built it so tennis fans can explore their own favorite storylines:

  • Headed to Flushing Meadows? Pull it up on your phone and compare the legends while you're on the subway.
  • Watching from home? Toggle between generations and see how the greats stack up.
  • Debating with friends? Settle it with data. Who really had the better run at the US Open? Whose win rate is most consistent year over year? Now you've got the receipts.

Happy watching!
