RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) announced today that the Virginia Board of Education approved in a unanimous vote to release three school divisions from their formal performance improvement agreements, known as Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), recognizing progress that has helped strengthen learning opportunities and outcomes for students. Danville City Public Schools, Greensville County Public Schools, and Prince Edward County Schools successfully met the criteria to conclude state-level oversight, reflecting sustained efforts to improve academic performance, student support, and school quality.
"We are thrilled to see these school divisions rising to meet the needs of students," said Virginia Board of Education President, Mashea Ashton. "Teachers, leaders, and community members have worked hard to support better outcomes for our students, and we are grateful for their work."
The MOU process is a collaborative framework under the Virginia Standards of Accreditation (SOA). When a division faces certain academic challenges, the local school board is required to enter into a formal agreement, or MOU, with the Virginia Board of Education. The MOU, which is unique to each division, outlines a shared roadmap to strengthen local schools and support student achievement. While in MOU status, the VDOE works closely with division leaders to provide intensive resources, coaching, and targeted support to help them reach their goals.
"I congratulate Danville City Public Schools, Greensville County Public Schools, and Prince Edward County Schools on their hard work to strengthen instruction, use data to drive continuous improvement, and ensure more students demonstrate proficiency," said Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jenna Conway. "Led by their local school boards, they have built a strong foundation of academic success that will have a lasting impact for the students and families they serve."
Moving forward, the VDOE will continue to partner with Danville, Greensville, and Prince Edward school divisions to ensure this momentum is sustained as they enter this new chapter of independent growth.
