Observance: Imagine A Day Without Water

Chesapeake Public Utilities Highlights the Value of Clean Water on Imagine a Day Without Water

On October 16, the Chesapeake Public Utilities Department is joining communities nationwide in recognizing Imagine a Day Without Water, a national day of awareness that highlights the critical role water plays in our health, economy, environment, and daily lives.

The initiative encourages people to pause and consider what life would be like without reliable access to clean water, even for a single day. From drinking and cooking to firefighting, healthcare, and local businesses, every part of community life depends on safe and sustainable water systems.

"Water is one of our most vital resources, yet it's often taken for granted," said David Jurgens, Director for Chesapeake Public Utilities. "Imagine a Day Without Water reminds us of the unseen work that keeps clean water flowing, wastewater safely treated, and our community thriving."

Across the nation, aging infrastructure poses challenges to deliver reliable water services. More than two million Americans currently live without access to safe, affordable water. Chesapeake Public Utilities joins this effort to raise awareness and encourage understanding regarding the importance of continued investments in water systems that protect public health, support economic growth, and strengthen environmental resilience.

"It just cannot be taken for granted," Jurgens stated. "We are dedicated to protecting this critical resource and to ensure that clean, safe water will be available for Public Utilities customers today and for generations to come."
