City of Annapolis Announces Annapolis Marine Tech Apprenticeship Program
ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 29, 2025) - The City of Annapolis, in partnership with the Marine Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM), announces a new Marine Tech Apprenticeship Program, a new city-funded initiative designed to train and employ the next generation of marine technicians. The program, introduced to the Annapolis City Council by Ald. Brooks Schandelmeier (Ward 5), addresses the growing need for skilled workers in the recreational boating industry, a cornerstone of the Annapolis economy.
Through a combination of on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and hands-on mentorship, apprentices will gain expertise in areas such as inboard and outboard engines, electrical and vessel systems, and marina operations. The program is structured to provide a direct pathway to high-paying, stable careers in the maritime sector.
"Annapolis has always been at the heart of Maryland's boating community," said Ald. Schandelmeier. "This program invests in our residents, our businesses, and the future of the maritime industry while ensuring that the city remains a hub for skilled marine trades. By creating good jobs right here in Annapolis we are showing that Annapolis is a leader in the maritime community."
Program highlights include:
Structured training: a year-long curriculum combining practical work and technical classroom instruction.
Experienced mentorship: Apprentices will train under seasoned marine technicians.
Industry-recognized certification: Graduates will earn credentials to support long-term careers.
Earn while you learn: Apprentices will receive a competitive wage during training, with full-time employment opportunities upon completion.
The first apprentices will be hired by Port Annapolis Marina and Diversified Marine Service, both based in Annapolis. Applications are currently being accepted. For details and to receive an application, contact Emily Decker at [email protected] .
The impact of recreational boating in Maryland is significant:
Annual economic impact $4.5 billion
More than 1,088 businesses statewide support the industry
Over 165,000 registered boats in Maryland.
A photo opportunity and official program announcement will take place at 11 a.m. on Oct. 3 at the Marine Trades Association of Maryland's booth during the Annapolis Powerboat Show.
