Norristown, PA - Today, nine governors representing both Democratic and Republican states sent a letterto the PJM board expressing concerns about the board's leadership and urging the board to fill the remaining two open seats with candidates recommended by the bipartisan slate of governors.
In the letter, the governors point out PJM's "multi-year inability to connect new resources to its grid efficiently and to engage in effective long-term transmission planning". In June, PJM raised prices across its 13-state region by up to 20 percent due to the regional transmission organization's lack of planning and delay in adding renewable energy to its grid.
The letter was signed by Governors Beshear (KY), Lee (TN), Meyer (DE), Moore (MD), Murphy (NJ), Pritzker (IL), Shapiro (PA), Whitmer (MI), and Youngkin (VA).
In response, Sierra Club Senior Campaign Advisor Jessi Eidbo issued the following statement:
"It's clear that the issues within PJM transcends political beliefs, and we can all agree that the board needs to do better by the 67 million customers that rely on it to keep the lights on. At a time when Americans can least afford it, PJM has continued to make decisions that result in higher electricity bills and put more pressure on wallets, which could have been prevented through smarter planning. We urge PJM to heed to the requests made in this letter, and put in a good faith effort to provide responsible energy solutions for communities across its service region, including advancing the ample cheap energy technologies waiting to deploy like wind, solar, and battery storage."
