AUGUSTA - National Disability Employment Awareness Month, observed each October, highlights the contributions of workers with disabilities and the importance of inclusive employment practices. The Maine Commission on Disability and Employment is using this occasion to draw attention to the employment gap between adults with and without disabilities in Maine.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 28% of Maine adults have a disability. Employment rates also differ between adults with and without disabilities. Approximately 81% of Maine adults without disabilities are employed, compared with 39% of adults with disabilities.

"At a time when employers are searching for workers, talented Maine people with disabilities are ready and willing to participate in the workforce," said Jennifer Kimble, chair of the Maine Commission on Disability and Employment. "Inclusive recruitment and retention strategies that recognize the value of hiring workers with disabilities benefit businesses, communities, and the individuals whose talents are too often underutilized."

For many people with disabilities, barriers to employment can extend beyond the workplace. Transportation challenges, housing instability, limited access to technology and fragmented service systems can make it harder to find and keep a job.

"The barriers faced by people with disabilities are not just employment issues, they are economic issues that affect families and entire communities," said Renee Doble, manager of community impact at Heart of Maine United Way and a member of the Commission on Disability and Employment. "In a state where nearly half of the households are living below the ALICE Threshold (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), creating inclusive workplaces helps connect talented individuals to opportunity while strengthening Maine's workforce and economy."
