On 9 and 10 June 2026, the First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala, paid an official visit to the Republic of Ireland.
Vice-President Aitala had several engagements with members of the Oireachtas (the National Parliament), including with the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Committee on European Union Affairs. Vice-President Aitala explained the Court's achievements and challenges, as well as the role of States Parties in supporting the Court, particularly bearing in mind the important role that Ireland plays given the upcoming Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which is due to commence on 1 July 2026.
During his visit, the Vice-President exchanged views on matters of mutual interest with the Attorney General of Ireland, Mr Rossa Fanning, and the Minister of State for European Affairs, Mr Thomas Byrne. He also had a meeting with the Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, Mr Liam Herrick.
