Speaker Rivas, Assembly Leaders Condemn Trump’s Latest ICE Enforcement and Voter Suppression Operation in California

Friday, October 9, 2026

SACRAMENTO - Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas and California Assembly leaders are issuing a clear message to Trump and his tyrannical immigration enforcement machine: No more ICE chaos in California, and no voter suppression ever.

Several media reports confirm ICE has begun to expand operations across the state - a campaign to provoke fear and unrest in California's most diverse communities just as ballots arrive in voters' mailboxes.

These agents are not promoting public safety, they're unleashing chaos in neighborhoods and disrupting families, schools and workplaces. Officers have been specifically told to "go after anybody," attempting to create a culture of fear as Californians exercise their civic rights.

But Assembly leaders will not stay silent and watch Trump's cruelty. They will continue to stand up for communities and defend the right to vote free from interference.

"Weeks before an election, Trump is unleashing indiscriminate ICE raids across the country. This isn't about public safety. It's about fear, and it won't work. Your vote is protected, your voice matters, and California Democrats will fight with everything we have to defend every person who calls this state home."

- Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas

"The video you saw today across social media, of ICE agents pulling a family apart, children from their mother, in full view of their neighbors, is disturbing. As a parent myself, I cannot think of a worse scenario than to be forced apart from my children, without any explanation of what happened or what they are to do next. As the incoming chair of the Latino Caucus, I strongly condemn the activities of ICE you are seeing across this state."

- Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, Vice Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus

"Yesterday, ICE shot a father who was in his car with his five-year-old child. This marks the 22nd reported incident involving ICE agents firing their weapons into a vehicle. We get through this by knowing our rights and looking out for one another. If you witness something, record what you can from a safe distance and warn others."

- Assemblymember Liz Ortega, Vice Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus

"The Trump Administration continues to terrorize our neighbors and we have to stay vigilant, connect vulnerable communities with mutual aid networks, and protect our Democracy. Their violence is not stronger than our community solidarity and they will not stop us from getting out to vote."

- Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, Vice Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus

"Trump is deploying ICE to intimidate voters and California's immigrant families, and we've seen this playbook before. Agents tear parents from their children. Classrooms and workplaces go empty. Whole neighborhoods learn to fear a knock at the door. The AAPI Legislative Caucus condemns Trump's reckless tactics without reservation. Our community knows what it means to be targeted for where we come from, and we will not let it happen again. Democrats will use every tool we have to protect immigrant families, every voter, and every Californian."
