Pool safety resources shared with hosts in Florida and Arizona

Summer is the busiest travel season, as families across the country search for the perfect getaway. For many guests, access to water-whether a pool, beach, or lake-is a top priority. In fact, bookings during summer months for Airbnb listings with pools in Florida rose 35% between 2024 and 2025, while bookings during summer months for Airbnb listings with pools in Arizona grew by 26%.1

As part of our commitment to help support great experiences, Airbnb is redoubling our efforts to promote water safety education among hosts in Florida and Arizona, two of Airbnb's most popular destinations for water-centric vacations in the US.

Partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide

Airbnb is continuing its efforts to raise awareness around guest water safety by teaming up with Safe Kids Worldwide, a leading global nonprofit dedicated to helping prevent childhood injuries. Together, Airbnb and Safe Kids are sharing actionable pool and water safety guidance with hosts in Florida and Arizona who have listings with pools or waterfront access ahead of the busy summer travel season. Guidance includes printable Water Safety Checklists and Water Watcher cards to leave for their guests.

"Water can be the centerpiece of family fun, but it also requires constant vigilance. By partnering with Airbnb to share proven pool-safety tips directly with hosts and travelers, we can help families create lasting memories-while keeping safety front and center," said Torine Creppy, President of Safe Kids Worldwide.

"Florida's tragic distinction as the nation's leader in fatal child drownings is a crisis we have the responsibility to confront. This year, lawmakers took meaningful steps towards tackling this problem, alongside Airbnb, advancing legislation intended to stop future tragedies. Every drowning is preventable, and the solutions are right in front of us-stronger awareness and education, expanded access to swim lessons, and consistent water safety regulations that protect families no matter where they live or visit," said Florida Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith, District 17.

"Summer is the busiest US travel season, and access to water-whether at a pool, beach, or lake-is top of mind for many families. We want to help every host feel informed and equipped, and for their guests to feel right at home in their listings. We're grateful to our partners for helping drive water safety education and preparedness forward. We're also proud to support efforts to make water safety equipment more affordable and accessible through our partnership with Life Saver Pool Fence and by lending our voice to state and local policies that will get it done," said Nathan Rotman, Airbnb Director of Policy Strategy, North America.

Safe Kids Worldwide's water safety tips that we have shared with Florida and Arizona hosts include:

  • Install and maintain a four-sided, climb-resistant fence with self-closing, self-latching gates that separates the pool from the rest of the yard.
  • Assign a responsible adult as the "Water Watcher" who remains free of distractions while supervising all children in or near the water.
  • Teach children how to swim and ensure everyone knows basic water-rescue skills.
  • Keep rescue equipment (life rings, reaching poles) and a fully stocked first-aid kit near the pool or waterfront.
  • Verify that pools and spas have anti-entrapment drain covers compliant with the Virginia Graeme Baker Act.
  • Install door, gate, and surface alarms to alert hosts and guests when someone enters the pool area.
  • Establish and post clear pool rules-no diving in shallow water, no running on wet surfaces, and no swimming alone.
  • Encourage guests to learn CPR and to bring US Coast Guard-approved life jackets for young or inexperienced swimmers.

Airbnb is also holding a free water safety webinar for hosts. On May 27, Airbnb and Safe Kids Worldwide will host a live virtual session open to all Airbnb hosts in Florida and Arizona, featuring Safe Kids experts and safety advocates. The webinar will cover best practices for fencing, alarms, active supervision, and how to highlight safety considerations to guests.

Discount on pool safety equipment for hosts

To help make safety upgrades more accessible immediately, Airbnb has partnered with Life Saver Pool Fence to offer hosts an exclusive discount: $100 off pool fencing and a complimentary pool alarm with the purchase of a pool fence. Hosts can redeem this offer with any Life Saver Pool Fence authorized distributor nationwide, or directly on the Life Saver Pool Fence website.

We encourage hosts with residential pools-particularly those in Florida and Arizona, where warm weather extends the swim season year-round-to take advantage of this offer as part of a comprehensive approach to help educate hosts about pool safety.

As part of the guidance we're sharing with hosts, we are also reminding them to update their listing description to confirm that pool safety equipment is installed and present at their home. We've long asked hosts to provide details of important safety considerations about their property and its surroundings, such as whether there's a pool onsite or another body of water nearby, and whether access is limited by a gate or lock.

A reminder about our new water safety pre-trip checklist

These efforts build on Airbnb's longstanding commitment to help educate hosts about water safety. Last August, Airbnb unveiled a Water Safety Checklist designed to help guests staying at listings with pools, hot tubs, or waterfront access feel more informed and prepared before they check in. The feature provides a pre-trip safety checklist for guests, covering tips on child supervision, flotation devices, and accessing local emergency contacts. The feature also suggests questions booking guests can ask their host about the listing's water safety protections and considerations.

Airbnb and Safe Kids Worldwide are committed to ongoing collaboration on educational campaigns, local outreach, and research. By combining host engagement, expert guidance, and innovative product features, we aim to help make every poolside memory a positive one.
