Heat Pump Open House Set for Nov. 19

AMES, Iowa - The City of Ames will host a public open house at the Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Ave., on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. focusing on heat pumps and winter heating. This event will provide participants the opportunity to ask questions and receive information about energy-efficient heat pumps, and to learn about Smart Energy rebates and federal tax credits to lower the cost of a new heating system.

In addition to heating a home all winter, heat pumps also keep it cool in the summer. In the summer, a heat pump works exactly like a traditional air conditioner, cooling interiors by moving heat from the inside to the outside. In the winter, heat pumps kick into reverse, pumping heat in from the outside air.

"This open house will be a great opportunity for the community to learn about sustainable heating options that are available," said Nolan Sagan, City of Ames Sustainability Coordinator. "The best time to install a heating system is when your current HVAC unit is nearing end of its useful life but before it needs major repairs. Because these systems can last 15-20 years, it's important to do some research before investing."

Sagan joined the City of Ames in July. The Sustainability Coordinator supports the City Council goal of valuing environmental sustainability and focuses on initiatives that help meet the goals of the Climate Action Plan (CAP).

Since 2008, Ames Electric Services has offered a broad range of energy efficiency rebates for customers through its Smart Energy Programs. These rebate offerings are being continuously evaluated to help customers save energy and money. The Smart Energy program also includes rebates for Energy Star-certified appliances including refrigerators, freezers, washer and dryers, and dishwashers, as well as rebates for induction stoves, battery-electric lawn mowers, geothermal heating systems, and electric vehicle charging.
