At the invitation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. KONG Yu Chau, Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, participated as an expert trainer at a radiation training workshop held in the Philippines from 13 to 16 October 2025. He also shared the role and experience of the Observatory in nuclear emergency response in Hong Kong.

The workshop, organized by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), aimed to enhance the emergency response capabilities of ASEAN countries for radiological incidents or nuclear accidents. Around 25 participants from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, attended the workshop. Together with an expert from the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Mr. Kong delivered detailed presentations on the IAEA's latest guidelines through lectures, case analyses, and practical exercises, helping participants understand the key management priorities and considerations during different emergency phases. Participants generally agreed that the workshop could improve their understanding of emergency frameworks and their emergency preparedness capabilities.
