Suffolk County Legislator Ann E. Welker recognized educators from Stony Brook Southampton during the March 10 general meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature and the Women of Distinction luncheon, both held in Riverhead. Wendy Pearson, vice president for strategic initiatives at Stony Brook University and executive director for Stony Brook Southampton, received a 2026 Woman of Distinction Award, and marine scientists Christopher Gobler and Ellen Pikitch were recognized for their leadership in protecting the waters of Shinnecock Bay.

During the morning session, Welker presented a proclamation highlighting the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program at the Southampton campus, led by Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences professors Ellen PikitchandChristopher Gobler. She recognized their role in restoring the bay's ecosystem and advancing its designation as a global Hope Spotby Mission Blue.

"A Hope Spot is a distinction that recognizes ocean regions critical to the health of our planet," said Welker. "Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this global recognition."

Gobler emphasized the program's dual environmental and economic success. Since 2015, the program has planted about five million clams, resulting in $4.5 million in dockside income for local baymen and women, and more than $45 million in total seafood-related economic impact.

"Too often, people think protecting the environment comes at the expense of the economy," Gobler said. "By restoring the ecosystem and the fishery, we brought back the economy, generating more than $50 million for the regional economy over the past decade."

Pikitch added, "This is something our entire community should be extraordinarily proud of. The Hope Spot has become a global symbol of hope. It shows that even in challenging times, it is not too late to turn things around through science, persistence and partnership."

Also speaking at the event was Marguerite A. Smith, Esq. of the Shinnecock Nation, who highlighted the deep cultural and spiritual connection between the community and the bay.

"Water is such an essential part of our life," said Smith. "For thousands of years, Shinnecock Bay has sustained us - spiritually, culturally and economically. We play, we pray, we work and we give thanks at the water. This recognition reflects what can be achieved when we move forward together in respect and partnership."

At the afternoon luncheon, Pearson was honored by Welker as the 2026 Woman of Distinction for Suffolk County's Second Legislative District. The luncheon was sponsored by the Suffolk County Legislature's Women's Advisory Board.

A Suffolk County resident, Pearson also received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Andrew R. Garbarino and a Certificate of Appreciation from Suffolk County Executive Edward P. Romaine.

In his proclamation, Romaine said, "This special event highlights remarkable women whose dedication, leadership and commitment to service help strengthen our communities across Suffolk County. Wendy Pearson's contributions and steadfast support for those around her reflect the spirit of compassion and civic engagement that this recognition represents. Her efforts have made a meaningful difference, and we are grateful for the positive impact she continues to have in our communities."

"It is an honor to serve the East End community by expanding educational opportunities and partnerships that support the region's environment, economy and cultural life," Pearson said.

Since joining Stony Brook University in 2023, Pearson has helped expand Stony Brook Southampton's programs in the arts, sustainability and workforce training for East End residents and school districts. These initiatives include partnerships with The Jazz Loft; performances at the Avram Theater; professional development in drone technology, emergency medical training, and agriculture; continuing education programs in comedy and creative writing; and specialized programs for children who stutter. The campus also serves more than 500 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in health professions, marine science and creative writing.

As vice president for strategic initiatives, Pearson works with campus leadership to advance institutional priorities, support implementation of the university's strategic plan and guide development of initiatives for the Southampton campus. She also serves on the board for the New York Climate Exchange on Governors Island.
