Controlled Burn in Wilderness Park Scheduled for April 21

Published on April 21, 2026

Parks and Recreation staff will conduct a controlled burn from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 21, on about 9 acres in Wilderness Park near South First Street and Old Cheney Road.

The Green and Red Trails between markers 28 and 32 will be closed until 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 22. Community members are advised to avoid the area during this project.

Aaron Druery, Parks and Recreation Greenways District Supervisor, said that controlled burns are a tool to manage large areas of native plants and grasses, reduce wildfire risk, and enhance wildlife habitat. Parks staff monitor weather and air quality conditions to ensure safe burns.
