21 WA Communities to Modernize Water Systems Thanks to Federal Dollars Secured by Cantwell

Cantwell secures $22 million in new water infrastructure investment as part of Senate-passed "minibus" appropriations bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and senior member of the Finance Committee, announced that federal grants to help secure clean water for 21 communities across Washington state were included in the final version of the second FY 2026 minibus appropriations bill, which passed the Senate yesterday. The bill now goes to the White House for President Trump's signature.

"Between aging infrastructure and a quickly growing population, water quality and management projects have become more important than ever in the Pacific Northwest. This $22.5 million in grants for 21 water projects in urban and rural communities throughout the state of Washington will help improve local drinking water supplies and wastewater infrastructure, reduce pollution of our waterways from stormwater runoff and aging sewer systems, and help remediate PFAS contamination without driving up water utility rates," Sen. Cantwell said.

In total, Sen. Cantwell helped secure $22,468,965 for water infrastructure in the State of Washington.

Descriptions of each grant, organized by region, are below.

Olympic Peninsula:

Kitsap County will receive $1,092,000 to upgrade its Central Kitsap Treatment Plant. This 45-year-old facility, which provides wastewater treatment for Naval Submarine Base Bangor as well as the greater Central Kitsap area, is at the end of its life expectancy and has difficulty meeting capacity during peak season. Rep. Emily Randall (D, WA-06) also submitted a request for this project.

Northwest WA:

The City of Granite Falls will receive $990,000 to rehabilitate their Burn Road Lift Station, which is at high risk of failure and poses a public health and safety threat to residential neighbors and the local elementary school. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) also submitted a request for this project.

The Port of Bellingham will receive $1,200,000 for the Fairhaven Marine Industrial Park Stormwater Improvement Project. This project will install a new stormwater system, increasing resiliency and protecting Padden Creek estuary.

King County:

The City of Bothell will receive $1,092,000 for the Woodcrest Utility Replacement Project, which will rehabilitate and upgrade the Woodcrest neighborhood's drinking water, sewer, and waste water systems. Rep. Suzan DelBene (D, WA-01) also submitted a request for this project.

The Covington Water District will receive $1,092,000 to construct a new seismically resilient water tank for drinking water storage. Rep. Kim Schrier (D, WA-08) also submitted a request for this project

King County Water District 54 will receive $1,092,000 for Water Treatment Modernization. The project will install a manganese treatment system, which will use an appropriate treatment technology to remove manganese, iron, and any other associated contaminants. Rep. Adam Smith (D, WA-09) also submitted a request for this project.

The City of Bellevue will receive $500,000 for the Lake Washington Sanitary Sewer Lake Lines Program, to complete a planning and program development process for the Strategic Lake Washington Lake Lines Management Plan. Due to their location in the lake or on the shoreline, an emergency failure of a segment of this sewer line would spill raw sewage into Lake Washington. Rep. DelBene also submitted a request for this project.

Southwest WA:

The City of Washougal will receive $1,300,000 to conduct PFAS remediation on city drinking water source wells.

The City of Vancouver will receive $1,092,000 to install a new wastewater lagoon aeration blower. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D, WA-03) also submitted a request for this project.

The City of Longview will receive $1,092,000 for the Fill Line to Water Reservoir Project to improve water quality. Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez also submitted a request for this project.

The City of Ridgefield will receive $1,092,000 for the Kennedy Well Project. The project will develop up to two new source wells on the south side of the city. Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez also submitted a request for this project.

Central WA:

The City of Entiat will receive $1,000,000 to modernize and expand the city's aging wastewater treatment plant.

The City of Toppenish will receive $1,000,000 to install a new solid state dryer for the city's wastewater treatment facility.

The City of Moses Lake will receive $2,000,000 to remediate a PFAS-contaminated drinking water well at the site of what used to be Larson Air Force Base. Sen. Murray also submitted a request for this project.

The City of College Place will receive $1,000,000 to address drinking water supply deficiencies by installing a new, larger capacity drinking water reservoir. Rep. Michael Baumgartner (R, WA-05) also submitted a request for this project.

Eastern WA:

The City of Oroville will receive $1,400,000 to replace approximately 3,500 lineal feet of aging and undersized water transmission main piping. Rep. Dan Newhouse (R, WA-04) also submitted a request for this project.

The Town of Nespelem will receive $1,000,000 to map out the town's existing water system and repair or replace necessary water mains.

The City of Palouse will receive $1,000,000 to complete wastewater treatment facility upgrades. Rep. Baumgartner also submitted a request for this project.
