DHS Blue Campaign leads national effort to combat human trafficking during awareness month

WASHINGTON - In recognition of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, ICE is amplifying its ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and raise public awareness through the Blue Campaign, the Department of Homeland Security's national public awareness initiative dedicated to fighting human trafficking.

Following the White House's Presidential Message on National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, ICE is reaffirming its commitment to protecting victims, holding traffickers accountable, and strengthening partnerships that prevent exploitation and modern-day slavery. Throughout January, the Blue Campaign is leading and supporting a series of outreach events, trainings and awareness initiatives designed to educate the public and empower communities to recognize and report human trafficking.

"Human trafficking is a brutal crime that preys on the vulnerable and threatens the safety of our communities," said HSI's Assistant Director for Countering Transnational Organized Crime James Harris. "Through the Blue Campaign, ICE continues to lead the charge in raising awareness, supporting survivors, and aggressively pursuing those who exploit others for profit. Awareness is prevention, and prevention saves lives."

ICE plays a critical role in the fight against human trafficking through its Homeland Security Investigations directorate, which investigates trafficking networks, rescues victims, and dismantles criminal organizations engaged in forced labor and sexual exploitation. The Blue Campaign complements these enforcement efforts by educating the public, industry partners, and frontline professionals on how to identify potential trafficking indicators and report suspicious activity.

Throughout January, ICE and the Blue Campaign:

  • Promoted #WearBlueDay on Jan. 11, National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, encouraging the public to wear blue and share messages of awareness on social media.
  • Is hosting and supporting multiple public-facing trainings and webinars to educate communities on recognizing and reporting trafficking.
  • Is partnering with transportation, hospitality, education and aviation sectors to strengthen prevention and early identification efforts.
  • Is providing victim-centered resources and materials to ensure survivors receive support and protection.

Human trafficking can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. ICE urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspected trafficking activity to local law enforcement or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888.

By combining aggressive enforcement with sustained public education, the Blue Campaign remains a cornerstone of the federal government's efforts to combat human trafficking and protect the most vulnerable. During National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and throughout the year, ICE continues its mission to disrupt trafficking networks, safeguard victims and ensure traffickers are brought to justice.
