Ascension Illinois unveils free and low-cost pharmacy service for underserved communities across Chicagoland

The program is part of Ascension's collaboration with Dispensary of Hope

Access to essential medications is crucial for improving the quality of life and health of Chicagoland. Ascension Illinois is launching the Dispensary of Hope program to ensure our community's low-income, uninsured residents have access to free medications.

This initiative is crucial in bridging the healthcare gap. Dispensary of Hope, a national nonprofit medication distributor , delivers donated medications to more than 200 partner sites and Ascension Rx pharmacies across the country. Dispensary of Hope's network filled 1.2 million prescriptions nationwide for 164,000 patients last year, delivering more than 3,000 prescriptions each day to uninsured and low-income individuals.

According to data from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and the Cook County Department of Public Health, there are over 400,000 people in Chicago and suburban Cook County who do not have health insurance, highlighting how vital a program like Dispensary of Hope is for the area.

"A key component of our Mission is to serve everyone in our community regardless of their ability to pay. Our Ministry's use of the Dispensary of Hope is just the latest example of our commitment to that community promise," said Ascension Illinois Chief Clinical Officer Dr. David Bordo. "We believe it is best for Chicagoland if everyone receives the healthcare they need, and our pharmacy commitments only reaffirm that we are acting on those beliefs."

This program will be offered at all three Ascension Illinois hospital campuses including in Chicago, Elk Grove Village and Hoffman Estates. All of our Ascension Rx pharmacies are key partners in the Dispensary of Hope program, aiding in the distribution of donated medications. To qualify for Dispensary of Hope, patients must complete an application process, be uninsured and not earn more than 300% of the federal poverty line.

Dispensary of Hope reported a 20% reduction in hospital stays and a 27% decrease in utilization costs. Medications help prevent unnecessary hospital visits by managing health conditions, reducing flare-ups and easing symptoms.

Dispensary of Hope was recognized with the American Pharmacists Association's Foundation Pinnacle Award for its efforts to eliminate barriers to healthcare. Their collaborative work with Ascension, Ascension Rx and other healthcare partners ensures that individuals facing financial hardships continue to receive the care they deserve, transforming lives and improving health outcomes.
