KILLEEN, Texas (Sept. 5, 2025) - The City of Killeen is beginning renovations at Long Branch Park in September to convert an existing tennis court into four new pickleball courts. The project is expected to take approximately two weeks. During the renovation period, tennis courts at Long Branch Park will be closed to allow for resurfacing, installation of nets and court furniture, and proper curing of the new surface.
The City Council approved the $25,000 project in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife, receiving a matching grant on May 5, 2025, which will reimburse 50% of the project cost, or $12,500. The addition responds to community interest in pickleball, commonly regarded as the fastest-growing sport in the country.
"Pickleball has grown tremendously in Killeen, and our community has been asking for more opportunities to play," said Antonio Murphy, Executive Director of Parks & Recreation. "This project adds to our recreation options and strengthens community connections."
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong and has become popular for all ages due to its accessibility and social nature. With these new courts, Killeen residents will have expanded options for staying active.
