UWSP faculty member to present cross-disciplinary artist talk at Lawrence University

A new exhibition at Lawrence University will feature works from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Assistant Professor Andy Gambrell, marked by an artist talk and opening reception.

Gambrell will give a presentation at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, in the Wriston Art Center, auditorium, 613 East College Ave., Appleton, Wis, followed by a reception. This talk is cross-disciplinary, featuring dance interpretations choreographed by UW-Stevens Point Emeritus Professor Susan Gingrasso and performed by UW-Stevens Point and Lawrence students. The event will be filmed for documentary purposes and by entering the Wriston Auditorium and Galleries, participants consent to being filmed.

The exhibition features paintings from Gambrell's show "Art for Humanity's Sake" and will be on display through Friday, May 15. Gambrell's contemporary work renews and extends American abstract painting through his use of a laser eye-tracking viewfinder to make digital drawings of the path of his eyes while experiencing the landscape. Whether viewing fresh winter snow at dawn in Plover or the summer moon over Stevens Point, this process of abstract painting results in a fresh, beautiful celebration of the Wisconsin landscape.

For the past several months, Gingrasso has collaborated with Gambrell by choreographing dance performances in response to the paintings. Gingrasso serves as the executive director of the Language of Dance® Center and was recently awarded the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Dance Education Organization.

Student dancers include Veronica Petrach, Graceanne Rendernick, Marcella Rose and Maddie Wallace from UW-Stevens Point and Billy Greene and Madison Tracy from Lawrence University. Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance Mauriah Donegan Kraker at Lawrence University has also supported the project as rehearsal director.
